:: Longboards. I love longboards. Day in and day out, in California surf, you'll catch more waves and have more fun riding a longboard. Many of my shortboard friends don't/can't surf in waist-high or lower surf. While they're griping about the crummy surf or lack of swell, I'm out in the water soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the glide, slide and occasional noseride. I shape two basic models; a neo-classic noserider and a modern longboard. I do two variations of MLB; the Nova emphasizes noseriding, while the Speedster emphasizes speed and likes bigger waves. The Neo has classic outline, rocker, bottom-contours and rails. Typical length is 9-0 to 10-0, nose width is 18.75" - 19.5", wide-point width is 22.5"-23.5" and tail width is 15"-16" with a wide 7" square tail. Choose pinched 50/50 rails or tucked 60/40. It comes with or without half-length, blended nose concave and moderate tail-V. Typical thickness is 3"-3.5". With single-fin box or glass on fin, this board is built for drawn-out turns, trimming and noseriding. You'd surf this board in shoulder-high or smaller, reef or point-break waves. The Speedster is a MLB shape built for speed and surfing off the tail. Typical length is 9-0 to 10-0, nose width is 17.75" - 18.5", wide-point width is 22"-23" and tail width is 14"-14.75" with a round-square, diamond or round-pintail tail shape. It comes standard with convex nose, slightly flat middle and moderate tail-V. Typical thickness is 3"-3.25". Rails go from soft 50/50 in the nose to 60/40 tucked in the middle to down hard in the last 16" of the tail. Recommended fin set ups are 2+1 or quad. The pulled-in nose really helps with steep-drops or late take-offs, while the pulled in tail, fin set-up and tail rocker make quick turns a breeze. That slightly flat middle is the gas pedal that will speed you pass those hissing sections. You'd surf this board in chest high to OH waves. The Nova is a cross between the Neo and the Speedster. Half-length, blended concave and pulled in tail will give you easy turning and plenty of tip-time. I'll dial-in the rocker to make it work best at your favorite break. Comes with your choice of tail shapes and fin set-up. A great all-around longboard, the Nova can be custom-shaped to meet the needs of a wide range of surfers. |
